"boringly lovely"?

I can't think of a worse thing to be called in a review than, "boringly lovely." What an odd half compliment Alastair gave one of Mark Morris' dancers in today's review of his new "Romeo & Juliet". Read it here. It's pretty vicious all around, but that line in the last paragraph caught me.

I would have liked to have seen this performance...

Alastair was being nice! She was awful. I've seen better performances at my daughter's recitals. She is an incredibly disappointing member of the MMDG, which normally boasts some of the best dancers out there- my favorites being Amber Darraugh, Bradon McDonald, and Lauren Grant. Amber was fantastic as Mercutio but Bradon was wasted on the role of Paris. He would have been a better Tybalt to Amber's Mercutio. But nothing could salvage the horrid lead performance of Rita Donahue, who is responsible for my first dissappointment in Mark Morris despite over 20 years of watching his work.

Wow thanks for the input. I so would have loved to see it for myself...it's great to hear different opinions though!

Oh my gosh! I thought the same thing when I read the review! "Boringly lovely"...it's quite descriptive. Without seeing the performance, I have an idea of what her dancing looked like. Poor thing.
