11 am - Female Rhythm Tap Dancers with a great sense of musicality and timing who have some experience in contemporary dance forms such as modern and/or jazz. Please wear nice rehearsal attire that exposes your ankles and flat tap oxfords. Please bring your headshot and resume.
1 pm – Female Jazz Dancers with a great sense of musicality and timing who have a strong ballet foundation. Please wear form-fitting dance wear and be prepared to dance barefoot. Please bring your headshot and resume.
Audition will be held at Flamenco Vivo Studios at 4 West 43rd Street, 8th Floor, NYC. Take the elevator to the 7th floor for changing rooms/restrooms and walk up 1 flight to the studio. Callbacks will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 from 10 am – 12 pm. Rehearsals begin the following week. There is currently no pay for rehearsals but there may be performance stipends available, depending on the venue. Tap Dancers must be available Mondays from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm and Wednesdays from 10 am – 12 pm. Jazz Dancers must be available Mondays from 12:45 pm – 4 pm and Wednesdays from 10 am – 12 pm. You are not required to be both a tap dancer and a jazz dancer to be part of the company. If you are, that is fantastic! Please stay for the full audition. Another Audition, NYCB Coppelia, & Frightful Films
Today was a busy, freezing cold Sunday.
It started bright an early with an audition for a well-known jazz dance company, which I honestly had little desire to actually dance with but...I'm trying to stay on this kick of trying for absolutely everything and trying to stay positive.
The audition started a half an hour late because of registration, and as usual there were tons of people crammed in the studio with little spatial awareness. That is my BIGGEST pet peeve in auditions AND class - people who are oblivious to those around them. Ugh. Anyway...the combination they taught was very hiphop-esque and uncomfortable for my ballet-based body. I wasn't particularly fond of the style and therefore was not a bit unhappy when I was cut, haha. It was not for me.
The director, however, was amusing. Before she cut the huge chunk of us, she made this big long speech about being a professional at an audition. She spoke about how jazz dance is an art form and not a "fad" and that it should be treated with respect. "You don't wear booty shorts to a concert dance audition. They're disgusting," she cringed, and half the room turned beat red with embarrassment. She's right, though. I was happy to be in my nice black tights with my hair glued back as usual. After criticizing clothing she went on to say that if you're going to bother to come to an audition for a professional opportunity you must "have a very fine tuned instrument. Don't do it if you're not in tune," she explained. "I don't know how some of you can even show up like that without a refined instrument..." Though she's right again, she was a bit harsh. It was just interesting to hear a speech like that in an audition situation.
Anyway, in the afternoon I saw my first NYCB performance of their winter season: the new "Coppelia." I bought a standing room ticket last minute but luckily nobody was in the last row up there so I got a seat. It was such a nice performance!
I like this story ballet and Delibes' music as well. I've danced bits and pieces of it for various performances over the years, and it's fun to do as well.
Tiler Peck was as great as she always is, with a special spark in her Swanilda. Andrew Veyette as Frantz was also good, particularly in his third act variation. Rachel Piskin danced the doll-like movements of Coppelia's 2nd act with great believability. She's so tiny onstage, much like the 8 ladies who played Swanilda's friends. They look like miniature perfect-bodied brunette clones (even though not all look like that in real life). Even better than them were the candy pink baby ballerinas in the Waltz of the Golden Hours in Act III. The perfect technique that defines SAB students was clear in all of their movements and poses. Their tiny tutus umbrella as they move, making them sparkling gumdrops lining the stage. Their spacing was cleaner than that of the company sections! Definitely a treat.
After that I practically ran downtown to attend the movie premiere of a film my friend (and often pas de deux partner) is in. "Perkins 14" is a gory horror movie, which has never been my kind of flick. But I was so excited to see Gregory on the big screen that a friend and I sucked it up and just hid our eyes for the scary stuff.
It was such a good movie! Yes, blood and guts, but the story was good and it was very well-directed. And of course Gregory was great. If you're in town please go see it! It's only showing a few more times this week.
Anyway, tonight I'm trying to get organized for a busy week. This is about the last week I have set post-Radio City plans for before I'll be really desperate for a job, haha. Tuesday I start the 5 day TAKE Dance Intensive, which I'm looking forward to. We have a mini studio showing at the end next Saturday. More details to come during the week.

Ah, Audition Season
January has a lot of connotations for a dancer – and not all of them positive. The end of the joyous Nutcracker (slash Radio City) run, the rush of the wintry snow and freezing cold winds, and the prospects of audition madness.
The latter is quite possibly the one I dread the most, haha. Up until this point in my life, auditioning has been just a normal part of the routine to figure out summer intensive plans, Nutcracker roles, and stints with small companies. But now…auditioning is THE routine. For the moment, it’s currently my full time job to FIND a job in this awful economy, where 12 Broadway shows closed at the same time and many ballet companies are laying off dancers. How lovely.
Ironically, my new year’s resolution is to “stay positive.” After week 1 of being back home in the city, I’m sticking to it but it’s certainly a struggle, haha.
Often in the past, when auditions have come up I’ve found some kind of excuse not to go. As usual I always had a thousand things going on at once and there was always somewhere else to be or something more productive I just had to be doing instead of stressing myself out at auditions. Now, I have no school and no internship, and therefore NO excuse not to go waste my time at equity auditions where I likely won’t even be seen.
Such was the case on Tuesday, when I was so proud of myself for attending 2 auditions in one day. Hah. The first was for Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. I auditioned for them about 2 years ago and when they made a cut the director called me over personally and gave me what she called a “pep talk”, saying that I was very young and needed more strength, but that I might be perfect for the show in a few years so I should definitely come back. At the time, I was ecstatic to hear that. Unfortunately now, the show is basically not hiring anyone, at all, haha.
Before we were taught the audition combination, the director (actually she’s the assoc. choreographer I believe) came right out and said that they don’t hire people straight into the show. They put people they like on a short “swing” list to potentially go in as understudies or when cast members take vacation leave. Then if someone eventually leaves (and why would you with that kind of gig/pay/opportunity???) then a swing may be put in full time.
So needless to say, the audition was unsuccessful in terms of landing a job. It was a decent time, though, because instead of just throwing out choreography and making us wait forever to do it in small groups, they actually took time to break it down almost like a coaching session. It’s nice to actually learn and get something out of an audition besides a big fat rejection.
After that one I ran downtown to another studio to try for another audition – for a musical theater summer season in Virginia (I figure after Radio City I must branch out beyond only ballet stuff…). This one, like Phantom, was an Equity call. That means you’re supposed to be part of the Actor’s Equity Union to participate and/or get the contract. Non-equity people can possibly be seen at the end of such a call if time permits, according to the rules.
Through Radio City I’m part of the AGVA union, but I can’t join Equity until I’m a year in good standing with AGVA. So perhaps my audition life will get easier next year at this time…
I sat in the crowded studio for 45 minutes before the audition monitor guy informed us non-eq folk that they would be typecasting us and only letting the people they were interested in that way come and dance. So we handed in our pictures and resumes and 20 minutes later they decided who to keep just from that. It’s a funny way of doing things, no? Anyway, I was cut from that as well but didn’t mind so much because they only seemed to keep tall people. Ah well.
This was just day one of audition season, so I think I’m going to have to develop some patience, haha. It’s not really the rejections I mind so much as the time lost in waiting around at these things. But I must remember that waiting and wondering is what got me Radio City, and I must hope that something similar will come along again soon!

an update
Again I'm slow on the blogging front...
The other day I had my call back for Radio City and it went really well...they didn't make any more cuts, and there were only 30 of us left. They said there's lots of jobs because they're adding an arena touring company in addition to the NY show and those in other cities, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. They won't tell us for sure until July! Can't wait that long...wish me luck...it would be such a great opportunity. Either way I was happy to make it that far in the audition...I actually had to SING at the call back, which I DO NOT do, haha. It brought me back to my middle school days when I was in chorus at school and I used to lip sync and let my friends with loud voices do the singing, haha. But I guess it went okay...they were more concerned with presentation than a good singing voice, so we'll see. I can fake it, haha.
Yesterday was opening night of the little play I'm dancing in this week. It went well...it's a pretty small theater but cozy. We had a nice audience response last night so that's good. It runs tonight and tomorrow and then that project is done.
What else...I have lots to update about but still don't have much time...I start ABT's intensive next Tuesday. I'm in a student showcase the following Sunday at Ailey. ABT has a mini-showing at the end. Dance Critics Conference coming up. Amongst other things.

minor excitement
Okay, for the moment I've figured it's no use trying to catch up with blogging past events since I don't have time. I WILL do it eventually because some important things have happened, but for the moment I'm starting fresh with today.
Minor excitement of the moment: I made it through 3 cuts and have a callback tomorrow for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular! Not to be a Rockette (i'm too short and don't tap!) but for one of the dancer parts. Exciting! Even if I don't make it it's nice to know I got this far since I rarely do these kinds of auditions.
I got there at 8:30am this morning for a 10am audition and already found myself drinking my coffee halfway around the block from the stage door! So many people - it looked like the lines you see on TV for American Ido. Funny. I was in the 2nd audition group (of 5 I believe) so we waited for an hour before I even went in. After a short combo they made a cut and then had us wait for like 2 HOURS! Insanity. They had us dance a lot more and made some cuts and after 6 HOURS of being at Radio City they called my name for a call back for tomorrow. Yay! There's still a lot of people they kept so I can't get my hopes up, but there were tons more that left earlier in the day, so I was happy.
Running amongst rehearsals the rest of the day...I'm performing in a small dancing part in a play at Manhattan Repertory Theater this Wed-Fri and also prepping for a student showcase next Sunday. AND getting in shape for ABT's intensive starting a week from tomorrow. AND other things.
The relaxation of Florida was wonderful but I'm glad to be back dancing to the faster pulse of New York!

ABT summer audition results

audition: ABT summer intensive
Today I had my audition for ABT's summer program. It was both for their normal 6 week program and also their 3 week collegiate program...and it went surprisingly well.
The age group was 16-22 so I fell somewhere in the middle, which was nice. There were a zillion people there though (actual number, somewhere around 80) so it was cramped, with a LOT of small groups for center work. I seriously don't know how they can see and judge people like that. I've always wondered that and have come to realize that a lot of rejections, not just me but other people as well, come more from the fact that they just don't SEE you rather than the notion of bad dancing/technique.
Anyways I was actually fortunate because I happened to be the LAST one to register (I wasn't even late..I guess a lot of people had pre-registered so I ended up last) so I was in the last group and the way the numbers worked out there were only 4 of us instead of 8. So hopefully that means they got to see us better.
Class itself was pretty simple. The only annoying part was having to keep myself warm and aware of the combination while waiting for 20 other groups to go before me. Such is life at an audition, though.
For my first of the season it wasn't so bad. I had a decent class. I should hear from them in about a week to see if I got in. We'll see.
Afterwards as I was leaving I ran into my friend and former Residence Director from my high school studio! I haven't seen her since I went to visit for my friends' graduation back in June, so that was exciting to see her unexpectedly! She was with some other students coming up for the audition. I miss her!
Anyways, it was a long day and a long weekend.
Tomorrow movmnt comes out. Head to Barnes and Noble!

audition pictures...
Every audition season, come January and February, I have to take on the annoying task of taking ballet pictures to give with my resume to companies and summer programs. I really hate the fact that so much is judged by a simple photograph when dance = movement, and a picture is not moving. Needless to say, taking pictures is not something I look forward to.
I did the first round this morning after class, although I may need to do more. They are fine for this weekend anyway...of course I'm not confident enough to actually show you the pictures on here, haha. BUT I did do a little photoshopping as I enjoy messing with stuff and came out with some kind of cool things...have a look.
I was lucky to have a wonderful background of the city! Ailey = amazing.
I did the first round this morning after class, although I may need to do more. They are fine for this weekend anyway...of course I'm not confident enough to actually show you the pictures on here, haha. BUT I did do a little photoshopping as I enjoy messing with stuff and came out with some kind of cool things...have a look.

SO busy!
This day, and week, has been insane!
This morning I did another interview for movmnt. Mystery person #2 was also really nice and gave me GREAT anecdotes to use in the article.
Then I just got out of a lonnnng audition for Rebecca Kelly Ballet, this contemporary company downtown. It was a really nice audition -- I liked the choreography a lot, and it wasn't too crowded. She has another audition in December before she makes any decisions or whatever, so I won't hear back for a while. It felt more like a good class than an audition, so...think positive.
Now I'm fumbling around trying to respond to many many messages I got while in the audition...I got last minute press tickets to review Complexions tonight, so I'm arranging for that to happen. I've been playing phone tag with another movmnt interviewee and I'm try to get that squared away. I got a call from a very important internship asking for references and an interview, so I'm in the process of that as well. Crazy! You know I'm busy when I can even find time to take class! I guess the audition counted though.
Anyway, I better get to work on organizing my life and stop rambling on here, haha. Report on Complexions coming later tonight :)
